Soil requirement for Sandalwood farming:

Sandal trees can be grown in all types of soil except marshy land. It needs at least 12  years to produce sandalwood from the tree. The tree is ready to cut after attaining a girth of 2.5 to 3 feet at the chest height of the tree. The heartwood starts developing after 7 years. A tree that has a circumference of 2.5 feet at the chest height provides sandal heartwood of about 35 to 60 kg.

Protection:

Protecting sandal trees is harder than cultivating them. But several methods are being adopted for the protection of sandal trees. Methods like constructing high compound walls around the land where sandal trees are cultivated or growing hedges all around, putting up a solar electric fence, fixing chain link mesh to the sandal trees and plantations.
